British Museum: Classical Civilisation Trip to London

The British Museum houses artefacts spanning over two million years of history, across six continents! Throughout the day, the students were able to immerse themselves in these remnants of the ancient world, and marvel at some of mankind’s earliest creations. In the morning, they enjoyed observing pediments, ionic frieze and the metopes of the Parthenon; a marble temple built between 447 and 432 B.C. and dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. Whilst only able to see fragments, the students found the extent of the detail on each one fascinating. They had the opportunity to read up on specific metopes which are particularly significant to Greek and Roman history.

After lunch, the students explored more of what the British Museum has to offer, by visiting the medieval European, Egyptian, and Israeli collections. These topics extend beyond the A-level syllabus, and students enjoyed the opportunity to extend their knowledge further, and so understand how these cultures have changed and developed over the centuries.
