This term saw one of the highlights of the Design and Technology calendar take place: the Summer Exhibition. Pupils, parents, and staff were welcomed to the DT department to admire the GCSE and A-level final pieces.
This year, our GCSE students were given three scenarios by the exam board—climate change, securing possessions, and playing games—and it was up to them to identify and resolve a ‘problem’ through their final design. Our Vth Form certainly got creative, and their pieces ranged from key cabinets and tennis ball carriers to a wearable swimming device designed to collect seawater rubbish.
For their coursework, the Upper Sixth were able to devise their own client-focussed projects, what an interesting range of pieces they came up with. Fadl G built an information hub for Star House, Hannah E designed a modular furniture set for Lord’s Cricket Ground, Freddie B constructed a point of sale for an expedition clothing brand based on Regent Street, and Hugo V crafted a steam-bent wooden bench for his neighbour’s oast house. It’s a particularly exciting time for our A-level students as they also begin to think about their plans post-Hurst. Fadl, Freddie, and Hannah hope to pursue design-related degrees at university next academic year, and we wish them all the best of luck.
For our Lower Sixth, this year’s project was no less challenging; they were tasked with designing a pavilion stadium for the College, using a fictitious £5 million budget provided by their client Dominic Mott. Much research went into their final pieces last term; on a trip to Lord’s Cricket Ground our students were given costings and planning advice by MCC Estates Director Robert Ebdon, and they enjoyed working with Mike Lawless (of LA Architects) to explore a wide variety of design ideas. Grace S’s aquarium inspired pavilion stadium would be quite something to see on the College campus!
Well done to all of the students’ whose work was on show; your hard efforts and commitment over the course of the Lent Term have resulted in a hugely impressive range of final pieces.
